School of AI at IIT Kharagpur

In its Platinum Jubilee year, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur announces the launch of the Jyoti Chatterjee School of Digital Engineering, Applied AI and ML — a transformative centre of excellence at the confluence of digital engineering, artificial intelligence, medical technology, and data-driven systems.

Marking a defining milestone in the Institute’s 75-year journey, the inaugural launch meeting was graced by Founder and Donor Dr. Jyoti Chatterjee (M.E., B.Tech., 1977). His visionary philanthropic commitment of up to USD 5 million over five years, extended through the IITKGP Foundation USA, reflects a deep and enduring dedication to advancing responsible and translational AI innovation.

The Joint Steering Committee brought together distinguished global leaders from industry and academia, including Dr. Prith Banerjee, Chief Technology Officer at Synopsys and Ansys; Mr. Surajit Sengupta, President & COO of xImaging Inc.; and Mr. Souvik Majumdar, Growth Leader at Cognizant Technology Solutions. Representing IIT Kharagpur’s leadership were Prof. Siddhartha Mukhopadhyay, Dean (Alumni Affairs); Prof. Anandaroop Bhattacharya, Dean (International Relations); Prof. Surjya K. Pal, Dean (Research & Development); Dr. Subhamoy Mandal, SMST; Mr. Sohom Banerjee, Program Manager, CRTDH; and Mr. Reetesh Chandra, Chief of Staff, Director’s Office.

The School’s academic and research vision will be anchored by Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director of IIT Kharagpur, who will guide its interdisciplinary roadmap, translational priorities, and strategic deployment of resources.

Deeply integrated within the Institute’s ecosystem — including the School of Medical Science & Technology, the Centre for Research in Digital Healthcare Technology, and Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Super Speciality Hospital — the new School is envisioned as a national hub for next-generation computing; artificial intelligence and machine learning; robotics and autonomous systems; cyber-physical systems; digital infrastructure; and biomedical AI.

As IIT Kharagpur celebrates 75 years of nation-building excellence, this landmark initiative reaffirms its commitment to shaping a responsible AI-driven future, strengthening India’s deep-tech leadership, and advancing scalable digital innovations aligned with national priorities and global benchmarks.
